Nana Badrena
A native of Puerto Rico, she began her ballet training with Yolanda Muñoz, Maria and Carlota Carrera, Maestro Parés, Ana Garcia, Maria Benitez , Ramon Molina and Lolita San Miguel to mention a few.
She also studied with the Pittsburgh Ballet, New York City Ballet, Madame Fokine, Madame Danilova among others. After several years of professional dancing , she turned to choreography and coaching, finding and expressive outlet and opportunity through Festival de Coreografos of Ballet Concierto de Puerto Rico.
Active as a choreographer for 20 years, she was recognised in 1988 at Bellas Artes as the youngest producer of a theatrical dance production "Reencuentro con un Origen" original work in collaboration with Andres Vega.
Ms. Badrena (licensed by Laura Alonso herself as Cuban Syllabus instructor) joined the Ballet Theatre of Pennsylvania in the year 1990, both as a resident choreographer and ballet mistress with Trinette Singleton (licensed RDA and former principal dancer for Jeoffrey Ballet). Both Ms. Badrena and Mrs. Singleton choreographed full length ballets such as Dracula, (featured in the Dancemagazine in the October issue of the year 1994), Nutcracker and Robin Hood that toured successfully for seven years in the United States. One more time Ms. Badrena and Mrs. Singleton joined forces and created the ballet Nosferatu for the Anderson Young Ballet, Indiana.
While working with BTPa. Mrs. Laura Alonso gave Ms. Badrena diplomatic permission to work in Cuba as a choreographer where she staged excerpts from the Nutcracker for Pro-Danza in the year 1990.
She garnered critical acclaim for her original works and received the Best Choreographer Award from the Minister of Cultural Events in the Dominican Republic for her work Tierra, originally set for Julie Mayoral Artistic Director of, Ballet Teatro de Ponce, Puerto Rico.
Ms. Badrena has served on the grant advisory panel of dance to The Pennsylvania Council of the Arts since 1996, working on the budgets of such companies as The Pittsburgh Ballet, Dance Alloy, The Pennsylvania Ballet among others, today she belongs to the advisory panel for the Maryland Council of the Arts and most recently she has been asked to join The National Endowment for the Arts in Washington Dc.
In 1997, she became the Artistic Director of The Harrisburg Dance Conservatory . While entering her fourth year as the Artistic Director, Ms. Badrena choreographed a contemporary version of Romeo & Juliet gaining the admiration of the audience and the critics. Today The Harrisburg Dance Ensemble is proud to say that it hold the title of Performing Company at the North-East Regionals.
Under her repertory we find Ms. Badrena has been acknowledged as a "brilliant choreographer" in Tangos y Tangedia to composer Astor Piatzzolla, Amanda based on the fiction novel from Laura Esquivel, Like water for Chocolate among others. Ms. Badrena holds several trusties for Laura Alonsos ballets, The Don Quijote Suite, the second act of the Swan Lake, Diana and Acteon, Pas de Quatre, La Fille Mal Gardee, Bayadere,Capriccio Espagnol, Giselle, Le Corsaire and others.
Nana Badrena is a guest master teacher to several Universities in the United States , she is also faculty teacher at the Rock School of the Pennsylvania Ballet and the Brandywine Ballet.
Her most recent full length work is Dracula the ballet choreographed for Laura Alonsos, Pro-Danza Company in Havana Cuba, returning in the fall of the year 2001 to set a new work Salome the ballet.
Prior to her recent move to Puerto Rico Nana Badrena was on the staff at the Northern Ballet school in Manchester,UK
